Local college and university students offer free tax filing service

KENTWOOD, Mich.—Tax season is almost here and Davenport University is ready to help.

Student and faculty volunteers from Davenport will begin offering free income tax preparation sessions to low- and middle-income tax filers Thursday, Jan. 23.  The service is available on a first come, first serve basis to families making less than $55,000 in total household income.  People who want to utilize the program should bring the following materials:

WYOMING, Mich.—Goodwill of Greater Grand Rapids’ newest store opens this Saturday, Dec. 14.

The new business is located at 870 28th St. SW, just west of the storefront Goodwill previously leased.  Unlike the old space, Goodwill’s new store features a donation drive through.  The LEED certified business has the same footprint as Goodwill of Greater Grand Rapids’ new stores, with an airy boutique feel.

Pinnacle Construction Group began work on the new facility in mid-August.  The new store is expected to create at least 20 new full-time jobs.  According to Goodwill of Greater Grand Rapids’ Facebook page, the grand opening celebration will begin at 9 a.m. Saturday.

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich.— Voting is underway for the top West Michigan business that inspires the community with its service.

This is the third year for Celebration! Cinemas Celebrated Service Award.  The winner is highlighted in a promotion airing before every movie shown at Celebration’s theatres. The prize packages for the six regional winners total more than $360,000 in value, with promotions, workshops, movie watch parties and cash prizes included.

“Genuine and creative acts of service make everyone’s day better,” said JD Loeks, President of Celebration! Cinema. “Hospitality and service are part of the DNA of this region, and we want to celebrate it!  We hope to get our communities talking.  We want people to vote and share their own stories of celebrated service.”

WYOMING, Mich.—Learn how taxpayer money can benefit you or your elders during the Kent County Senior Millage Open House Friday, October 18.

The Kent County Senior Millage was approved by voters in 1998 and renewed and increased in 2006.  In 2013, the millage is expected to generate $6 million for 44 service programs for older adults.

The Kent County Senior Millage Open House runs from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. at Kentwood Christian Church, located at 5841 Kalamazoo Ave. SE.  Visitors can enjoy a light lunch while perusing booths representing 31 millage service providers.  Door prizes will also be available.

Visitors are encouraged to come early to attend the Advocates for Senior Issues meeting, from 10 a.m. to 11 a.m.  State Rep. Ken Yonker is the guest speaker.

New Goodwill store on 28th Street takes shape

WYOMING, Mich.--- Goodwill Industries of Greater Grand Rapids is helping revitalize the busy 28th Street corridor with a new store in Rogers Plaza.

Goodwill is moving just east of the storefront it currently leases.  Unlike the old space, Goodwill’s new store will feature a donation drive through.  The LEED certified business will have the same footprint as Goodwill Industries of Greater Grand Rapids’ new stores, with on open, airy boutique feel.   

This will be Goodwill Industries of Greater Grand Rapids 21st store, including two boutiques.  The group’s most recent store opened inside the old Walgreens on Diamond Avenue and Michigan Street in Grand Rapids in late August.

Three-county campaign to Take the Stairs kicks off September 3

Organizations in Kent, Ottawa and Muskegon counties are teaming up this week to encourage people to take the stairs.

Take the Stairs Week runs September 3 through September 6.  The three-day campaign is meant to encourage people to become more physically active while saving energy.  According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, graphic designs promoting healthy behavior have been shown to motivate stair users; that’s why Kendall College of Art and Design at Ferris State University created images for this campaign.  Free color signs are available at the Heart of West Michigan United Way for businesses and organizations with escalators or elevators.

ArtPrize winner among participants in Fallasburg Fall Festival 2013

The winner of ArtPrize 2010 will be among the more than 95 artists taking part in Fallasburg Fall Festival for the Arts.

LowellArts!  recently released the list of festival vendors, which includes ArtPrize grand prize winner Chris LaPorte. LaPorte’s 28-foot wide pencil drawing “Cavalry, American Officers 1921” earned him $250,000.

 Artists from as far away as Florida will be showcasing their skills during the festival, which runs September 14 and 15.  Visitors can enjoy live music while shopping for new art.
