Local college and university students offer free tax filing service

KENTWOOD, Mich.—Tax season is almost here and Davenport University is ready to help.

Student and faculty volunteers from Davenport will begin offering free income tax preparation sessions to low- and middle-income tax filers Thursday, Jan. 23.  The service is available on a first come, first serve basis to families making less than $55,000 in total household income.  People who want to utilize the program should bring the following materials:

Comstock Park hosts 6th annual Cancer Classic Jan. 24

COMSTOCK PARK, Mich.-- The 6th annual Cancer Classic basketball games will take place Friday, Jan. 24 with proceeds benefiting Relay For Life of Comstock Park.

This year's opponent is Wyoming.  The varsity girls' game will be at 6:00 p.m. followed by the varsity boys' game.  Cancer Classic T-Shirts and crew sweatshirts will be available in the high school, Mill Creek and Pine Island offices for $10 (T-shirt) or $20 (crew sweatshirt) starting Tuesday, Jan. 21.  Admission to the games will be $3 with the purchase of a 2014 Cancer Classic T-Shirt or Crew Sweatshirt.

Vista Charter Academy students advance to Regional Spelling Bee

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich.—Two Vista Charter Academy students are on their way to the Regional Spelling Bee.

On Tuesday, Jan. 14, sixth grade student Eduardo Mora took the top spot among spellers in the 4-8 grade category.  Fourth grade student Maurielle Hayes was the runner-up.   Third grade student Serenity Cain won in the 1-3 grade category.

Both Eduardo and Maurielle will compete in the Regional Spelling Bee on Feb. 11 at Cherry Creek Elementary in Lowell. 

Vista Charter Academy is a free public charter school serving students in grades kindergarten through eighth.

BYRON CENTER, Mich.—National Heritage Academies, a national charter school management company, honored teacher Laura Crump from Cross Creek Charter Academy in Byron Center  with an excellence in teaching award.

Every year, NHA celebrates the finest educators in its system of schools by highlighting outstanding teachers in four categories: Grades K-1, Grades 2-5, Grades 6-8 and Co-curricular. The finalists are determined by a number of factors including student test scores, annual performance evaluations and parent satisfaction data. There are fifteen finalists for each category.

Crump, a young 5s teacher at Cross Creek, won the excellence in teaching for Co-curricular. NHA President and CEO Chip Hurlburt visited Cross Creek Charter Academy on Thursday, Dec. 12 to present the award to Crump.
