Billboard: Homosexuality not a civil right

WYOMING, Mich. (WZZM) -- A billboard on US-131 near 36th Street in Wyoming is turning heads. The message on it says homosexuality is not a civil right.

The billboard is sponsored by the Michigan Oak Initiative, a branch of a church based South Carolina.

The message on it shows people of different races, next to a face with rainbow facepaint. It says people are born with their skin color but homosexuality is a behavior.

"You don't have to be a Christian, or a Jew, or a person of faith of any kind," said Mark Gurley, "it just means that things go better when there's a moral code underlying everything, and our Constitution is based on a moral code, and based on the Bible. I just don't want to see that undermined."

Meanwhile, the same message is on a billboard in the Detroit area.

In response, a group called This Won't Stand has set up a Go Fund Me page to put its own electronic billboards on the same space and donate to what it calls organizations defending equality.

They're hoping to buy ad space wherever there's an Oak Initiative billboard in Michigan.
