Metro Health exploring "strategic partnership"

WYOMING, Mich. (WZZM) -- Executives at Metro Health say they are exploring a "strategic partnership" with a Tennessee-based hospital operator and the Cleveland Clinic.

Metro Health issued a news release Wednesday night, announcing its board of directors had approved talks with Community Health Systems.

Executives say they are seeking an affiliation so they can reduce healthcare costs and improve the quality of the care they provide.

Metro CEO Michael Faas said the hospital began pursuing partnerships one year ago.   Partnering with CHS, he said would improve choice in west Michigan, and make the region a health care destination.

Faas says the affiliation will better position Metro Health under the new healthcare reform law.

CHS is one of the largest for-profit health care systems in the country.
