My Town Wyoming: Officers warn of warm-weather burglars

WYOMING, Mich.— Wyoming Public Safety officers are looking for a group of burglars taking advantage of the warmer weather.

Investigators say between June 2 and June 3, burglars broke into several northside homes by cutting or removing  screens on windows that were left open.  In one case, the burglars entered a home through an unlocked back slider door.

The U.S. Department of Justice says one-third of home burglaries involve unlocked doors or windows. Residents can take several steps to protect their homes, including:

  • Lock all doors and windows.
  • Eliminate signs you may not be home (i.e., door flyers or overflowing mail).
  • Trim shrubs or trees that obscure the view of your house.
  • Consider installing a home security system or motion sensor lights.
  • Keep a watchful eye on your neighbor’s home and ask them to do the same.

Anyone with information regarding these crimes is asked to call the Wyoming Department of Public Safety at (616) 530-7300 or Silent Observer at (616) 774-2345.
