Old Wyoming building near train tracks burns

WYOMING, Mich. (WZZM) -- A building, which the Wyoming Fire Chief says has been abandoned for decades, caught fire Tuesday afternoon.

It is located near the intersection of Marquette & Burlingame Avenue SW, and is believed to be an old train station or storage area. The building was vacant at the time of the fire and no one was hurt.

The fire department is still working to determine the cause. The building is still mostly standing, and there are no plans to tear it down.

Wyoming will combine police and fire departments

Wyoming will combine police and fire departments

Wyoming will combine its police and fire departments under a newly approved city budget.

The city council unanimously approved the plan Monday.  The budget includes reducing the public safety tax  by .25 mills, merging police and fire into a public safety department and increasing water and sewer rates by two percent.

The budget also gives the city manager a 2.1 percent pay raise, but does not guarantee any future pay increases.  It also puts the city manager on a “pay for performance” evaluation system.

The new budget takes effect July 1.
