Interview With Jim Bruckbauer of the Michigan Land Use Institute

On Tuesday, May 3rd, voters in Grand Rapids, East Grand Rapids, Kentwood, Wyoming, Grandville and Walker will vote on a millage to increase service on The Rapid, the area's public transit bus service.  To help voters who may be confused by some of the information I did an interview with Jim Bruckbauer, who works as a transportation policy specialist with the Michigan Land Use Institute

City of Wyoming Presents Recommended 2011-2012 Budget

Wyoming, MI, Mon., May 2 - Curtis Holt, city manager for the City of Wyoming, will present the recommended budget for the 2011-2012 fiscal year for discussion on May 2 at the city council meeting being held at 7 p.m. at City Hall.

The $99 million budget does not call for any major capital projects or any significant changes. It does recommend a shift of .30 mils from Capital Improvements to Solid Waste. The shift would not increase the current millage rate. A rate adjustment of 2.11% is also being recommended for water and sewer services.

Wyoming hosts National Drug Take Back Day

 

WYOMING, Mich. (WZZM)- The city of Wyoming is participating in the National Drug Take Back Day.

The event is sponsored by the U.S. Drug Enforcement Authority and is being held to raise awareness on the proper disposal of prescription drugs.

Growing concern over pharmaceutical pollution in waterways has led cities like wyoming to participate in programs like the take back day.

Dave Oostindie, City of Wyoming says, "We needed to find a way to get these out of the waste stream give people an easy access to the program to get rid of this stuff thats been in their homes for many years."

Wyoming residents are asked to drop off any unused prescription drugs at the Wyoming Police Department between 10 a.m.- 2 p.m. on Saturday.

Local pharmacies ar also taking part in National Drug Take Back Day.

 

Marge's Donut Den celebrates the Royal Wedding

WYOMING, Mich. (WZZM)- Marge's Donut Den on 28th Street in Wyoming celebrated the pageantry and beauty of the Royal Wedding in its own way.  Staff members dressed in white, wore veils and served wedding cake to customers.

"I think we lay awake at night thinking what can we do next at Marge's Donut Den?  So we just love to have fun, our customers love it, they just love it.  I've been proposed to about three times already this morning, so this is a good thing," said Marilyn Free of Marge's Donut Den.

Owner Marge Wilson said, "If you can make a person smile, what more is there?"

Marge's Donut Den is famous for celebrating every special occasion- from the Super Bowl to elections and even playoff victories.

Good Samaritans rescue ducklings

Good Samaritans rescue ducklings

Six ducklings are back with their mother, thanks to a group Good Samaritans.

Bob Drake Junior says the ducklings fell through a storm drain near the Home Depot on 54th Street.  Drake and five others pried up the grating, scooped up the ducklings, then took them to their waiting mother.  The rescuers then escorted the whole family to a field leading to Buck Creek.

Celebrate El día de los niños/El día de los libros (Children’s Day/Book Day) with KDL. A celebration will take place from 2:30 – 4:30 pm on Friday, April 29 at the Wyoming branch. Children of all ages are invited to come enjoy traditional Mexican crafts, music, and other activities.

Children’s Day/Book Day, founded by author Pat Mora in 1996, is a daily commitment to link all children to books, languages, and cultures.

Wyoming Fire Dept. names recipients for 2010 Fryling/Yonkers Memorial Firefighter of the Year Award

Wyoming Fire Dept. names recipients for 2010 Fryling/Yonkers Memorial Firefighter of the Year Award

Wyoming, Mich. (WZZM)-The Wyoming Fire Department announced the recipiencts of the 2010 Fryling/Yonkers Memorial Firefighter of the Year Award.

Firefighter Brad Deppe and Firefighter Brian Fryling were selected for going above and beyond the call of duty.  They will be presented with their awards at the Wyoming City Council Meeting on Monday, May 2, 2011. 

Firefighter Deppe helped save someone's life while attending church on November 28th, 2010.  Deppe administered CPR and used an AED to help restore the person's heartbeat.

Firefighter Fryling used an AED and performed CPR when his co-worker collapsed at work on August 17th, 2010.

The Fryling/Yonkers Memorial Firefighter of the Year Award is presented annually to a nominated person.  The Firefighter of the Year Award was renamed back in 1980 when Ron Fryling and Les Yonkers were killed in the line of duty during the Chinatown Restaurant fire.
